Before heading out to the senior center for our weekly card game and potluck, I wanted to make something a little different — a nostalgic family favorite that most people these days have never even heard of: Apple Pan Dowdy.
This was my mother’s recipe, and true to her style, she never really measured anything. So today I’m doing my best to translate her ‘a little of this, a little of that’ approach into something you can actually follow along with at home. It’s not an exact science, and honestly, that’s part of its charm.
If you’ve never had Apple Pan Dowdy before, it’s a cozy, old-fashioned dessert where the crust actually rises up through the apples as it bakes, rather than sitting neatly on top the way a traditional pie crust would. It creates this rustic, almost broken-up look that’s part of what makes it so special.
The whole thing comes together warm and cinnamon-spiced, with a unique red sugar sauce that soaks into the crust and apples as it bakes. It’s the kind of dessert that fills the whole kitchen with the best smell, and it’s guaranteed to get people asking what it is and where the recipe came from.
This is a wonderful one to bring to a potluck or gathering if you want to serve something a little different from the usual dessert table lineup — it’s simple to make, but it definitely makes an impression. Watch the video below to see exactly how it’s done!
