My Mom’s Old Fashioned Banana Pudding: A Southern Classic

August 23, 2026 by Cherry Leave a Comment

Few desserts say ‘Southern gathering’ quite like a good banana pudding, and it’s one of those recipes that everyone seems to have an opinion about — whether it should have a meringue, whipped cream topping, or even a surprise topping like this one, whether the wafers should be crisp or soft, and just how ripe those bananas really need to be.

This is a dessert built entirely around layers — cool, creamy custard, tender vanilla wafers, and ripe banana slices, stacked again and again until you’ve got something that’s just as pretty as it is delicious. The layers need a little time in the fridge to really come together, which makes this a wonderful make-ahead dessert for a gathering.

Whether you grew up with this on your family’s holiday table or you’re making it for the first time, banana pudding has a way of bringing people back for seconds. It’s comforting, it’s a little nostalgic, and it never seems to last long once it hits the table.

Watch the video below to see exactly how I put this one together, layer by layer!
