A tin bar for your kitchen is easy and cheap!

July 19, 2021 by Cherry

You can change the front of your kitchen bar by just buying some tin at your local hardware store. You will need to cut it into the proper size and screw it into the bar. So easy! You can also change the color of the tin to make it aged it if you like.

Our daughter-in-law was updating her kitchen by painting the cabinets. She wanted to change her bar to tin from just a plain wooden bar. wooden sided kitchen bar

You can see in the background that her cabinets are now white and her bar is wooden so she wanted more of a farmhouse look. She asked my husband and me to change it. So these are the steps we took.

  • First, we painted the trim on the bar to match her cabinets.wooden sided kitchen bar

Measure the tin

  • We measured the bar and then went to our local hardware store and purchased some tin.
  • Next, we set up our sawhorses with 2 2X4’s to give the tin some stability.saw horses with 2 2X4
  • We laid the tin on the sawhorses and measured the tin to fit the side of the bar. We used a crayon to mark the saw line as it showed up better than a pencil. The bar required two pieces for us to cut.man measuring tinman measuring and marking tin with crayon

Cut the Tin

  • This next step is probably the most important. My husband turned the blade on the skill saw backwards. It is the only way to cut tin. Then, he used the skill saw to cut the tin along the line.man sawing tin

Paint the tin (if desired)

  • Our daughter-in-law did not want it shiny tin so we painted it to look like a picture that she had that had some tin on it. We had to play around with colors to get the color she wanted, but the main color was Country Grey by Apple Barrel. You could make it look more rusted if you added in some brown. woman painting tincountry grey paint

Drill pilot holes in the tin

  • After the tin was sawed and painted and allowed to dry, I held it while he drilled a pilot hole. (This is our cute 2 year old grandson helping him.) We mad sure to match up the two pieces of tin and overlap them as needed before he made the pilot holes.man and child drilling pilot hole in tin

Screw the tin to the wood

  • Next, he screwed the tin to the wood through the pilot hole.man screwing screw into tin

Finished Product

Our daughter-in-law was happy with her finished product, but you could also add additional pieces of trim or change the paint color to give it a more rustic look.
